Many people who live in large cities don't own a car. However there may be times when the use of a car would come in handy. This is where Zipcar steps in. Zipcar is a car sharing program that has popped up in many of the large cities across the U.S. Once you become a Zipcar member you can have access to a car by the hour or the day, for a fee of course.

How It Works
Once you join Zipcar they send you a Zipcard.  You then reserve a car by the hour or day.  This can be done by phone or online.  Once you reach the Zipcar location, you use your card to unlock the door from a sensor on the windshield.  You are then free to use the car for your reserved time.  When you are finished, you bring the car back to its reserved parking spot.  Gas and insurance are included.

Price
These prices were taken from the San Francisco area; prices in your area might be a little different. There are two pricing structures to choose from, the extra value plan and the occasional driving plan.  There are four monthly price options to choose with the extra value plan: $50, $75, $125, and $250 (plus a one-time $25 application fee).  The hourly rates start at $8.10 and the daily rates start at $61.20.  Gas, insurance and 180 free daily miles are included.  However, there is a $0.35 per mile charge if you go over the 180 miles.  So if you chose the $50 plan and go over your allotted time, you pay as you go at a discounted rate.  Each price option has its own benefits depending on how much you plan to drive during the month.

The occasional driving plan works a little different.  You pay a one-time application fee of $25 and an annual fee of $50.  The hourly rates start at $9 and the daily rates start at $68.  There is the same $0.35 per mile charge if you go over the free 180 miles per day.

The starting prices for each plan are for basic cars.  Prices will increase with the use of premium vehicles.
